When it comes in handy

Lists and glossaries

Alphabetise names, terms or references so they are easy to scan and look professional.

Number lists

Sort numbers in true numeric order, so 2 comes before 10 rather than after it.

Cleaning exports

Order a messy export and drop duplicates in one step before using it elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Why use numeric sort instead of alphabetical?
Alphabetical sorting compares character by character, so it places "10" before "2" because "1" comes before "2". Numeric sort reads each line as a number and orders by value, so 2 comes before 10 as you would expect. Use numeric mode whenever your lines are numbers or start with them.
What does case-insensitive sorting do?
It groups words together regardless of capitalisation, so "Banana", "apple" and "Cherry" sort as apple, Banana, Cherry rather than putting all the capitalised words first. With it off, uppercase letters sort ahead of lowercase ones, which can scatter related words apart.
Can it remove duplicates while sorting?
Yes. Switch on the dedupe option and identical lines are collapsed to one as the list is sorted, so you get a clean, ordered, unique list in a single step.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser. Your text is read and processed on your own device, nothing is uploaded, and nothing is logged or stored. Once the page has loaded, it keeps working even if you go offline.
